Silver Age. Russian Art in Vienna around 1900

Jun 27 - Sep 28, 2014
http://www.belvedere.at

The Belvedere’s exhibition Silver Age - Russian Art in Vienna around 1900, scheduled for summer 2014, will be devoted to Russian art and the cultural relations between Russia and Austria at the beginning of the twentieth century. The term Silver Age refers to the cultural bloom in Russian literature and the visual arts after 1900 and is considered an equivalent to the German expression Jugendstil or Art Nouveau.

Two important exhibitions organized by the Vienna Secession in 1901 and 1908 introduced the Viennese audience to contemporary Russian art, which met with a highly positive response from both critics and art buyers. While the first show dealt with art production in northern countries and therefore presented only a section devoted to Russian art, the second exhibition, entitled Modern Russian Art, entirely concentrated on the latter. The display primarily comprised works by the then-firmly-established group World of Art (Mir Iskusstva), as well as examples by members of a young association of artists named Blue Rose (Golubaia Roza), the very last generation of Russian Art Nouveau. Three paintings on view in the exhibition held in 1908 were acquired for the Modern Gallery, i.e., today’s Belvedere, including the outstanding Portrait of the Polenov Family by Boris Kustodiev, which had been rejected by the conservative Russian art scene.

The exhibition Silver Age - Russian Art in Vienna around 1900 will present works by such Russian artists as Michail Vrubel, Valentin Serov, Nicholas Roerich, and Boris Kustodiev, whose pictures were on display in Vienna more than one hundred years ago, and illustrates the mutual influences of this cultural exchange between Russian and Austrian art.

Jeff Koons

27th June 2014 - 19th October 2014
www.whitney.org

Jeff Koons is widely regarded as one of the most important, influential, popular, and controversial artists of the postwar era. Throughout his career, he has pioneered new approaches to the readymade, tested the boundaries between advanced art and mass culture, challenged the limits of industrial fabrication, and transformed the relationship of artists to the cult of celebrity and the global market. Yet despite these achievements, Koons has never been the subject of a retrospective surveying the full scope of his career. Comprising 120 objects dating from 1979 to the present, this exhibition will be the most comprehensive ever devoted to the artist’s groundbreaking oeuvre. By reconstituting all of his most iconic works and significant series in a chronological narrative, the retrospective will allow visitors to understand Koons’s remarkably diverse output as a multifaceted whole.

This exhibition will be the artist’s first major museum presentation in New York, and the first to fill nearly the entirety of the Whitney’s Marcel Breuer building with a single artist’s work. It will also be the final exhibition to take place there before the Museum opens its new building in the Meatpacking District in 2015.

26.06.2014 – 07.09.2014
http://www.arts-museum.ru

El Greco y la pintura moderna

24 de junio – 5 octubre 2014
www.museodelprado.es

Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926–1938

June 24 - October 13, 2014
http://www.artic.edu

Seeking to make “everyday objects shriek aloud,” or make the familiar unfamiliar, Belgian artist René Magritte created some of the 20th century’s most extraordinary—and indelible—images. This exhibition, the first major museum show to focus on the artist’s most profoundly inventive and experimental years, features over 100 paintings, collages, drawings, and objects, along with a selection of photographs, periodicals, and early commercial work, that trace the birth of the themes and strategies Magritte would go on to use throughout his long, productive career—and which make his paintings so unforgettable today.

The exhibition concludes with a remarkable group of works Magritte made in London and in Brussels between 1937 and 1938, with a particular emphasis on the commissions he completed for the eccentric British collector Edward James, including the Art Institute’s own Time Transfixed. The show’s chronological endpoint, 1938, marks both a historically and biographically significant moment: it was just before the outbreak of World War II and the year Magritte delivered an important retrospective account of what had made him a Surrealist painter.

Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875)

Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, the son of a stonemason and a lace maker from Valenciennes, built an exceptional career closely linked to the “fête impériale” of Napoleon III’s reign.  Standing out vividly in the artistic milieu of his time, he was also one of the most perfect embodiments of the Romantic idea of the artist cursed by the brevity and brilliance of his career, concentrated into around fifteen years, and by the violence and the passion of an unrelenting struggle with subjects chosen or commissioned (the Pavillon de Flore in the Louvre, The Dance for Charles Garnier’s Opera).

The sculptor of smiling subjects, painter of movement, outstanding portraitist, familiar artist of the Cour des Tuileries, attentive observer of the realities of street life and also a sensitive admirer of Michelangelo, Carpeaux was constantly immersed in sombre melancholy, using broad brushstrokes from his earliest days, for the tragedy of Ugolin eating his own children, and, later, for the ghostly flashes of a religious feeling imbued with anxiety, the violence of shipwreck scenes and for sorrowful self-portraits.

The first retrospective since 1975 devoted to his works as a sculptor, painter and illustrator, this exhibition will explore the varied work of a major figure of French sculpture in the second half of the 19th century who, according to Alexandre Dumas, was “more alive than life itself”.

THE WORLD IS AN APPLE: THE STILL LIFES OF PAUL CÉZANNE

22nd June 2014 - 22nd September 2014
www.barnesfoundation.org

Premiering at the Barnes Foundation, this tightly curated exhibition charts a thematic and chronological sweep of Cézanne’s still life painting, showing how the ‘Master of Aix’ recast the genre and set it on a new course.   Traversing the breadth of his still life production—from early paintings engaging with past masters to very late works unique to him, and treating the range of themes, including apples, flowers and skulls—this select gathering of paintings offers viewers a brief reappraisal of Cézanne’s monumental achievement in this genre.

Cézanne’s art remains central to enduring concerns of art making, touching on materiality and representation, as well as on the interpretive foundations of art history itself. Comprised of more than 15 Cézanne masterpieces, in addition to a clutch of works by related artists, The World is An Apple: The Still Lifes of Paul Cézanne seeks to render succinctly the richness and novelty of still lifes created by an artist of rare intuition and unerring aesthetic sensibility.

http://www.arts-museum.ru

Making Colour

18 June – 7 September 2014
http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk

‘Making Colour’ will provide visitors with a unique and exceptional opportunity to journey through the history of colour, by exploring the wide range of materials that are used to create colour in paintings and other works of art.

‘Making Colour’ is the first exhibition of its kind in Britain. Each room will be dedicated to a particular colour from the spectrum, as well as a room devoted to gold and silver.

‘Making Colour’ will draw on the expertise of the Gallery’s Scientific Department and the spectacular range of paintings in the Collection. The exhibition will help visitors to understand the history of the use of colour over a 700-year period – from the early Renaissance to the Impressionist movement.

Visitors will explore the origins and developments of the physical materials themselves, from natural and mineral products to manufactured pigments. The exhibition also examines the material problems faced by artists in achieving their painterly aims; the breakthroughs they struggled for and the technical challenges they faced.

Several major national cultural institutions have loaned works for the display – which has painting at its heart but also includes minerals, textiles, ceramics and glass. These form a rich and diverse exhibition, which illustrates the importance of colour in the way that creators of works of art experience and represent the world.

Puro semplice e naturale. nell'arte a Firenze tra Cinque e Seicento

17-06-2014 - 02-11-2014
http://www.polomuseale.firenze.it/

The most important Fabergé collection outside Russia is coming to Montreal – the exclusive Canadian venue. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Russian jeweller Carl Fabergé (1846-1920) created precious objects for the Czars Alexander III and Nicholas II. The name of this firm became synonymous with elegant craftsmanship in luxury jewellery, and is also associated with the final days of the Russian imperial family, a tragic story that marked the start of the twentieth century.

The exhibition features some 240 objects, including four of the most famous Easter eggs commissioned by the Romanovs. Enamelled picture frames, clocks, gold cigarette cases and knobs for walking canes, rock-crystal flowers, caskets and brooches encrusted with rubies continue to fascinate us as they did when they first appeared in the windows of the Fabergé stores in Saint Petersburg, Moscow and London.

An exhibition organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for the Montreal presentation.

Mondrian and his Studios

6th June 2014 - 21st September 2014
www.tate.org.uk

Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was one of the most important contributors to the development of abstract art at the beginning of the 20th century. This brand new exhibition, which commemorates the 70th anniversary of the artist’s death, provides fresh insights into Mondrian’s practice and explores his relationship with architecture and urbanism.

Mondrian and his Studios considers not only Mondrian’s importance in the field of abstraction, but also the relationship between his iconic artworks and the space around them. Mondrian’s studios in Amsterdam, Paris and New York all reflected different stages of the painter’s way of thinking and of his intentions.

The exhibition focuses on this connection between painting and architecture after Mondrian’s move to Paris in 1911, with a fascinating reconstruction of his studio at 26 Rue du Depart, Paris being a major highlight of the display. Visitors can explore a life-size replica of the studio, and physically immerse themselves in Mondrian’s world and work.

Arshile Gorky and the Collection

From 5 Jun 14 to 31 May 15
http://www.gulbenkian.pt

This exhibition of some works of the CAM's Collection is structured around four major themes: Portraits, Still Lifes, Surrealism and Abstractionism. Various works by Portuguese artists such as Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Mário Eloy, Vieira da Silva, Mário Cesariny and Paula Rego engage in dialogue with the works of Arshile Gorky (c.1904–1948), an artist of Armenian origins who emigrated to the United States in 1920.

Gorky developed a style of painting that allied abstractionism to surrealism and was an early trailblazer of post-war American Abstract Expressionism.
